Tips to Take Care of Your Skin During Winter

Roderick Ng

Winter invariably comes with its share of dryness and dullness of skin. The moisture content in the air goes down taking a toll on the skin on your face, hands and feet. The dry air can make wrinkles more visible, while also causing the skin to dry or flake. That is why it is even more important to take care of your skin in the winter season. Go through the following tips to know what you should do to make your skin glowing and moisturized during the cold season:

Keep it moisturized

One of the most basic tips to winter skin care is to keep your skin hydrated. It is not enough to use a moisturizer that you use during the rest of the year. Invest in an oil-based moisturizer, which will form a protective layer on the skin enabling it to retain more moisture than a regular lotion. Search for oils such as mineral oil, avocado oil, almond oil or primrose oil for best results. Settle for lotions that have humectants which is known to attract moisture to your skin. But remember to slather these creams and lotions within a few minutes of coming out of the bath for maximum benefits. You can get all these sort of  oil-based moisturizer, lotions and skincare product through online.

Use sunscreen generously

If you thought that sunscreen was only for summer, you are gravely mistaken. Winter sun can damage your skin no less than the powerful summer heat. Buy a sunscreen with a broad spectrum so that you are well protected against the sun. Slather it on your face, hands and other exposed areas at least 30 minutes before stepping out of your house. If you need to stay out, do reapply sunscreen as many times as you need.

Take care of your feet

Feet dry up fast in winter owing to which they need a strong moisturizer to take care of them. The foot lotions you use around the year is not strong enough to retain the moisture of your feet in winter. Look for lotions containing glycerin or petroleum jelly for proper hydration of your feet. You should also invest in an exfoliate to get rid of the dead skin.

Look after your hands

It is a tough job to keep your hands moisturized as its skin is thinner than on most other parts of your body. Moreover, the skin on your hands has fewer oil glands, making them dry up even faster. The dryness in your hands can lead to itching and cracking which makes it important to use a hand cream before going to bed. Apply it evenly on your hands to keep them moisturized. It is best to use a hand cream at night as it is advisable not to do any work after applying the cream. Make it a point to wear gloves before stepping out of your home if it is too cold. However, watch out that your gloves are not wet.

Stay away from extremely hot baths

It feels wonderful to take a shower with very hot water on severely cold days. However, the heat of the water breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, leading to a loss of moisture. Avoid showering in extremely hot water, and go for warm water instead. It is even better if you bathe with lukewarm water containing baking soda or oatmeal. This will hydrate your skin and prevent it from becoming dry and itchy.
